Palestra: Integration of a Second Waste-to-Energy Plant into the District Heating System of Budapest


Short description of the presentation:

Budapest, the capital of Hungary is a city of two million inhabitants. 270 000 tons of municipal solid waste comes to be in a year, the majority of which ends up in a nearby depo. Disposal is the worst option in urban waste management, damaging the environment in the highest extent. Calorific utilization is significantly more environmentally friendly: renewable heat and electricity can be generated from the municipal solid waste. One waste to energy plant already is in operation in Budapest, however waste production claims for a second one.

In our previous research economic and logistical evaluation has been conducted for a second plant south of the city. In the current lecture the integration strategies of the produced heat into the city's district heating system will be presented. Heat loss evaluation was carried out as the plant is located 13 km from the district heating network. Furthermore, we will present a machine-learning based heat demand prediction model which serves the optimal, weather dependent performance regulation of the plant.


About the presenter: Kende KOCSIS, Master student of Energy Engineering has been researching waste-to-energy systems in the past two years. He has won the Scientific Competition of Budapest University of Technology and Economics in 2022 and 2023. In 2023 he won the scientific competition on national level. His work has been awarded with several scholarships and he has presented his research results internationally in Portugal, Slovakia, Turkey, Egypt. Currently he is on Erasmus semester in Porto. He is going to start.
